Solar Rebates & Incentives

The Aussie government has been very aggressive in the last couple of years in pushing for the use of renewable and sustainable energy. And rightly so because Australia’s weather is ideal for wind and solar energy. Australia is relatively sunny all year round except for a few places. Harnessing the sun’s power is practical and cheap.

The weather conditions in Queensland are very favourable for a solar energy system both for homes and commercial buildings. There are several national and local solar incentive and rebate programs that are available for households and small businesses who wish to transition into solar energy. The solar electricity rebates are making monthly electricity bills much more tolerable.

Australian Government Solar Rebates

There is a popular misconception that the Australian Rebates Program ended last year (2019). That is not true. In fact, the program will continue to exist until 2030. They only lowered the rebate amount slightly. The rebate amount will continue to decline until it gets to $0 after 2030. Solar power rebates vary in every state. Let’s take a look now at the solar power rebates in Queensland.

Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme

The small-scale renewable energy scheme offers financial incentives for households and small businesses to install and use eligible small-scale renewable energy systems like solar energy systems. It works by creating small-scale technology certificates that will be used for incentives and rebates.

Small-scale technology certificates are provided upfront for the system’s expected power generation over a 15 year period or, from 2017, the installation year, until 2030 when the scheme ends. Households who purchase these systems can assign the right to create their certificates to an agent in return for a lower purchase price.

For every 1,000 kilowatt-hours of estimated production, the system gets a small-scale technology certificate or STC. These STCs can then be sold at a price of around $35 – $40 each.

So if you install a 6-kilowatt solar panel system this year (2020), you will get around 91 STCs in Queensland. Remember that each state’s computation of STCs varies slightly. If the STCs are sold at $40 each, your total rebate is $3,640. That is an equivalent of $607 per kilowatt for your 6-kilowatt solar power system. So if the purchase price of your whole solar panel system is $9000, you will only pay $5,360 because the rebate is deducted from the purchase price.

Queensland Government Feed-in Tariffs

Queensland’s current feed-in tariff rate is $0.9369 cents per kilowatt. This is for excess solar energy collected by your solar energy system that goes right back to the grid. The amount is then deducted from your total monthly electric bill. This is common for solar energy systems without battery storage. Those with solar battery storage can still feed back excess energy to the grid when the storage is full.

Solar electricity rebates in Queensland makes a significant impact on the monthly electric bills of users.

Interest-free Loans and Grants

Installing a solar panel system can be expensive, more so when you add solar battery storage. The Queensland government has come up with interest-free loans and grants for households and small business to help reduce the burden.

  • Solar Panel System
    – Loans of up to $4,500 payable within seven (7) years. No interest, no fees, no charges.
  • Solar Battery Storage System
    – Grants of $3,000 and up to $6,000 loans with no interest, no fees, no charges, and payable within 10 years. Households can apply for both the grant and loan while the small business can only apply of the grant.
  • For both Solar Panel and Battery System
    – Grants of $3,000 and loans up to $10,000 payable within 10 years, no interest, no fees, no charges. Households can apply for both the grant and a loan while the small business can only apply for the grant.

As a general rule, to qualify for the rebates, loans, and grants, you must:

  • Be a homeowner
  • Receive a Family Tax Benefit Part B
  • Have a power bill of more than $1,000 in the past six (6) months
